Ram Steps
Sparkling Clear, Easy to Maintain Pool Water
1.Filtration: The better the filtering qualities of your pool, the cleaner and clearer your water will be - the cleaner your water, the less chemicals you'll need to fight murky water and save yourself chemical dollars. Be sure to keep your filter, pump, lint trap and skimmer baskets clean and in proper working condition. Run your pump and filter per manufacturers recommendations. See your Ram Dealer for your pool equipment needs.
2.pH Level: Test your waters pH every couple of days. If necessary, add Ram pH Plus or Ram pH Minus to adjust pH and maintain the ideal range of 7.4 to 7.6 ppm.
3.Chlorine: Test chlorine level every couple of days and maintain a chlorine residual of 1.5 to 3.0 ppm of Free Chlorine. Use Ram 1" or 3" Tablets in an automatic or floating chlorinator, maintain a stabilizer (Cyanuric Acid) reading of 30 to 80 ppm to prolong chlorine life.
4.Total Alkalinity Hardness: Once a week test your Total Alkalinity and Calcium Hardness levels in your water. Ask your Ram dealer for the proper levels to maintain in your pool depending on whether your pool is made of plaster, vinyl, fiberglass or is painted. If adjustment is needed, use Ram Alkalinity Control or Ram Hardness Control.
5.Algaecides: Algaecides should be used weekly to help chlorine combat and kill algae spores as they enter your pool. The regular use of Ram Poly Algaecide or Ram Mustard Out 60 will ensure that your pool water will remain algae free.
6.Shock: Shock your pool weekly or after heavy swimmer loads during the hot summer months to burn out any contaminants from swimmers or heavy rains. Granular Shock in the form of Ram Litho Shock or Ram
Clearox will ensure contaminate free, sparkling clear pool water. Shock every two weeks during the cooler months when pool is not in use.
7.Maintenance: Maintain water clarity with the use of Ram Water Clarifier, Ram Clear Floc and Ram Metal Hold to remove all the impurities that can cloud your pool water. Bring water into your professional dealer for testing.
Starting Up Your Pool
When starting up a reopened or freshly filled pool, make sure the filtration system is clean and operating properly. Clean any and all debris out of pool. Bring a quart of pool water in to have it professionally analyzed for proper water balance.
Proper chemical and balance levels:
pH - 7.4-7.6
Free Chlorine - 1.0 - 3.0 ppm
Alkalinity - Masonry Pool Surfaces...80 -125 ppm. (plaster)
Non-Masonry Pool Surfaces...125-150 ppm. (Vinyl/Fiberglass)
Hardness
Alkalinity - Masonry Pool Surfaces...200-250 ppm. (plaster)
Non-Masonry Pool Surfaces...200-250 ppm. (Vinyl/Fiberglass)
Stabilizer
30-80 ppm. (Cyanuric Acid)
Note:
1. Proper balanced pool water not only saves you money on chemical usage, it also protects and extends the life of your pools surface and filtering equipment.
2. After initial pool opening, have your pool water professionally tested every 3 months to maintain water balance.
Algae and its Characteristics
Algae is one of the most persistent forms of plant life. It can be free floating in the water or it can cling to walls, floor and equipment. Nourished by sunlight and heat, algae thrives in water with a high pH level and water with high nitrogen level. Algae fosters growth of bacteria. If treatment is not taken quickly, it gets harder to kill and remove.
Black Algae Cyanophyta: Algae with dark blue, black or green color. Grown in colonies as small dots. Forms a protective layer over itself. Mostly visible in white plaster (recommend: Ram Black Out, Ram Mustard Out 60).
Green Algae Chlorophyta: Most common algae growth. Forms in green patches on pool and spa surfaces. Can be removed by brushing, but must be treated with chemicals (recommend: Ram Poly Algaecide or Ram Mustard out 60).
Yellow Algae Phaeophyta: Also called Mustard Algae, it creates a slimy layer that guards it from sanitizers. When brushed, yellow algae is removed easily but returns quickly. Yellow Algae can set in on any pool or spa. Chlorine may slow its growth, but will not completely kill this strain of Algae. An algaecide must be used to effectively kill and prevent this Algae (recommend: Ram Mustard Out 60
or Ram Poly Algaecide).
Yellow (Mustard) Algae treatment
Yellow Algae or Mustard Algae can grow quickly on pool walls. If brushed it can be removed easily, but will return quickly. The following steps can be taken to kill yellow algae:
1.Check pH level. It should be 7.4-7.6 ppm.
2.Brush pool walls.
3.Superchlorinate (shock) pool using proper chemical.
4.White Plaster Pools: 2 lb. per 10,000 gallons of Sentry Chlorine (Calcium-Hypochlorite)
5.Vinyl/Fiberglass Pools: 2 gallons of liquid chlorine or 2 lbs of Ram Litho Shock per 10,000 gallons.
6.Add 17 oz of Ram Mustard Out 60 per 10,000 gallons or 36 oz of Ram Poly Algaecide per 10,000 gallons.
7.Run filter system 24 hours.
8.Brush off any remaining visible algae.
9.Vacuum pool and backwash/clean filter.
10.Do not allow swimmers in pool until chlorine level drops to 3.0 pm or lower.
Helpful Hint: To prevent regrowth of algae use 4 oz. of Ram Mustard Out 60 or 9 oz. of Ram Poly algaecide every 7 days.
Green Algae Treatment
Green Algae grows easily in pool water and on walls. It is green to bright green in color. Green Algae clouds pool water easily. Take these steps for teatment of green algae:
1.Check pH level. It should be 7.4-7.6
2.Check circulation of pool water (are baskets and filter clean? Clean if needed).
3.Turn filter system off
4.Superchlorinate (shock) pool
5.White Plaster Pools: 2 lb. per 10,000 gallons of Sentry Chlorine (Calcium-Hypochlorite)
6.Vinyl/Fiberglass Pools: 2 gallons of liquid chlorine or 2 lbs of Ram Litho Shock per 10,000 gallons.
7.Next day turn filter system on.
8.Brush off any remaining visible algae.
9.Vacuum pool and backwash/clean filter.
10.Add 11 oz. of Ram Mustard Out 60 per 10,000 gallons, or 36 oz of Ram Poly algaecide per 10,000 gallons.
11.Do not allow swimmers in pool until chlorine level drops to 3.0 pm or lower.
Helpful Hint: To prevent regrowth of green algae use 4 oz. of Ram Mustard Out 60 or 9 oz. of Ram Poly algaecide per 10,000 gallons every 7 days.
